Full Recovery After 16 Year Old Girl Has Transplanted Heart Removed
An article published Online First and in a future edition of The Lancet reports the extraordinary story of Hannah Clark who had a donor heart grafted onto her own after suffering heart failure as a baby. She underwent surgery ten and a half years after the transplant to remove the donor heart. This was possible because her own heart had recovered satisfactorily to work on its own. Today, three and a half years after this second operation, Hannah, now aged 16, has made a complete recovery. The article is the work of leading heart surgeons Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Imperial College London, Heart Science Centre, Harefield Hospital, Middlesex, UK, and consultant Victor Tsang, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK and collaborators.

Bathtub Danger: Thousands Of Kids Injured Each Year In Slips And Falls
More than 43,000 children are injured in bathtubs and showers every year, mostly from slips and falls, according to the study, "Injuries Associated With Bathtubs and Showers Among Children in the United States." While bathtub injuries associated with tap water burns and submersions have generated much research, this is the first study using nationally representative data to look at injuries from slips and falls, which are responsible for the majority of bathtub injuries. Using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1990 to 2007, researchers evaluated an estimated 791,200 bathtub- and shower-related injuries during the 18-year study period among children 18 years old and younger who were treated in U.S. emergency departments.

House Panel Passes Protection For Drug Makers

The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed an amendment to their broad health reform bill giving drug makers 12 years of exclusive rights to market new biologic drugs, "a setback" to the administration and consumer advocates who hoped to make generic drugs more widely available, the Wall Street Journal reports. The panel voted 47-11 on the measure, which "would also allow "evergreening," the practice by pharmaceutical companies of making minimal adjustments to their drugs, such as creating extended-release versions, as a way to lengthen their monopoly." "Mr. Obama and some Democrats, including the energy committee chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., have pushed for getting generic versions of complex biologic drugs to the market in five to seven years, saying it would speed up access for consumers to cheaper generic brands and help reduce the country"s health-care costs," the Journal reports (Mundy, 8/1).
