Insurers Underpaid 'Billions' In Health Claims
The Senate Commerce Committee has found that a flawed payment database produced by a UnitedHealth subsidiary and distributed to other major insurance companies has led insurers to underpay millions of out-of-network claims, forcing patients to make up the difference of health care providers" fees, the Wall Street Journal reports. Aetna, Cigna, WellPoint, and other large insurers used the data to calculate their "reasonable and customary" charges. They also provided UnitedHealth"s subsidiary, Ingenix, with historic data about their payments, which became the foundation of ongoing versions of the flawed payment models.

Antidepressant Ineffective For Repetitive Behaviors In Teens And Children With Autism
Teens and children with autism spectrum disorders who were given citalopram, an antidepressant, experienced no change in their repetitive behaviors, according to a study reported in Archives of General Psychiatry. Repetitive behaviors are common among people with autism, as are inflexible routines, which sometimes interfere with everyday life.

RCN Statement On Lord Ara Darzi

Commenting on news that Lord Ara Darzi will stand down as a government minister, Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), paid tribute to his contribution to the health service. He said: "Lord Darzi has been instrumental in shifting the focus of health reforms to where they should be, which is on providing quality care. We want to pay tribute to Lord Darzi, especially for putting clinical staff at the centre of this vision. He leaves a lasting legacy on the health service and it will be important to continue to focus on quality and safety and not to let financial pressures take centre-stage over the coming months and years. "Lord Darzi"s commitment has stemmed from his front-line experience in the NHS which is welcome as it shows how a focus on quality over targets will ultimately help to improve care for all."
