17 Million US Children Live More Than An Hour Away From Trauma Care
More than 17 million U.S. children live more than an hour away by ground or air transportation from a life-saving pediatric trauma center, according to a new study by researchers at The Children"s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. The creation of a national inventory of pediatric trauma centers may help to identify the locations of gaps and greatly improve access to care for U.S. children, the authors said.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on supporting exceptional early career researchers and innovative cancer research, named 17 new Damon Runyon Fellows at its May 2009 Fellowship Award Committee review. The recipients of this prestigious, three-year award are outstanding postdoctoral scientists conducting basic and translational cancer research in the laboratories of leading senior investigators across the country. The Fellowship is specifically intended to encourage the nation"s most promising young scientists to pursue careers in cancer research by providing them with independent funding ($140,000 each) to work on innovative projects.

U.S. Decision On Use Of Adjuvants Could Reduce World Supply Of H1N1 Vaccine, Says Lancet Editorial
"A U.S. plan to rely on swine flu vaccines without ingredients to stretch the supply [known as adjuvants] would reduce the number of available shots just when other countries need them most, the British journal Lancet said in an editorial," Bloomberg writes. On July 7, the WHO recommended the use of adjuvants - "mixes of oil and water that trigger a stronger response in the body to antigen, the substance that induces immunity" - to increase the global vaccine supply. Though adjuvants are not approved for flu vaccines in the U.S., HHS" decision to declare the H1N1 flu a public health emergency in April gave the FDA the go-ahead to use "unapproved medical products including adjuvants," according to Bloomberg.

UK To Play Lead Role In European Fight Against Dementia

The UK will play a leading role in coordinated European action to tackle dementia from. A new initiative launched by the European Commission has adopted proposals to tackle Alzheimer"s disease, dementias and other neurodegenerative conditions. The UK is one of ten countries that will lead research aimed at tackling shared health and social care problems. According to the Commission there are over seven million people with Alzheimer"s disease and related disorders in Europe and it is predicted that this number will double in the next 20 years. Today"s actions mark new steps both in the Commission"s "Europe for Patients campaign" and the new approach of Joint Programming in research. Dr Susanne Sorensen, Head of Research, Alzheimer"s Society says, "Building on successful high impact dementia research, the UK will play a critical role in this initiative, leading the fight to defeat dementia. By uniting to find a cause, cure and fund care, we can galvanise our efforts and offer hope to millions of people. "But while Europe strives forward, the UK government still lags behind the US, Germany and France in providing dementia research funding and there is still no specifically targeted dementia research funding. Yesterday the government promised to develop a strategy for investment in dementia research. It must make good on its promises or we will all pay the price." In an open letter to the government yesterday, 31 leading dementia researchers united to call for a national plan for dementia research and a tripling of current investment. The letter coincides with a unique ministerial research summit on dementia which stated the importance of increasing research funding spent on dementia. Experts agree the UK must follow the French model for dementia research which provides a focussed structure to support the full breadth of cause, cure and care research. Alzheimer"s Society
